Dr Nic Wilson, a specialist in sexual medicine in Jamaica, said that although the increase in the prevalence of erectile dysfunction is concerning, sexual health has been shown to be improved over time. "There is a significant increase in erectile dysfunction among women and men in Jamaica," he said.

According to Wilson, Viagra has been shown to cause some mild side effects, including headache, facial flushing and indigestion. "Men can have headache, facial flushing, indigestion, and stuffy nose, but these are not common," he said.

Wilson toldhe had received reports of dizziness, fainting, visual disturbances and ringing in the ears.

Wilson said Viagra should not be taken by men over the age of 18.

He said erectile dysfunction is more prevalent among men aged 18 to 41.

He said that as more men are using erectile dysfunction medication, they may be at a higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction.

He said the National Institute of Health (NIH) has recommended that anyone using a medication containing sildenafil citrate, a component of Viagra, be advised to stop taking the medication and seek medical attention if they develop a painful erection or have visual disturbances, such as blurred vision, blue-tinted vision or a reddening or numbness in the extremities.

Wilson said the effects of Viagra have been reported in Jamaica.

He said that he had seen a report of men with erectile dysfunction in Jamaica who had not been prescribed a medication containing sildenafil citrate, a component of Viagra.

Wilson said Viagra should not be used by people who are taking nitrate drugs, such as nitroglycerin, or recreational drugs containing nitrates, such as isosorbide dinitrate, recreational drugs containing amyl nitrite or nitrite.

Wilson said Viagra may cause the following adverse reactions:

• Feeling sick (nausea), vomiting, stomach pain or cramps
• Feeling dizzy, drowsy or lightheaded
• Feeling of numbness in the extremities (vertigo)
• Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
• Feeling faint (feeling light-headed or faint, with light-tiredness)
• Vomiting

Wilson said these reactions are usually mild and go away on their own.

Wilson said it is important that anyone who is taking any of the following medications is monitored for any possible effects:

• Nitrates, including nitroglycerin
• Alpha-blockers, including doxazosin (Cardura, Tamsulosin), tamsulosin (Flomax, Pristiq), dapsone and dutasteride (Avodart)
• Other drugs containing nitrates or nitrite, such as isosorbide dinitrate, isosorbide mononitrate, nitroglycerin and nitroprusside (Nitrolingual, NitrolingualMatex)

Wilson said this type of medication can cause side effects such as chest pain and nausea.

Wilson said there was also a possible risk of priapism, a prolonged erection that lasts more than 4 hours, which can be life-threatening.

Wilson said the possibility of developing this type of reaction is very low.
